Cefixime 200 mg Capsule
What is Cefixime and what is it used for?
Cefixime is an orally active, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that has demonstrated in vitro bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
It is used to treat the following acute infections when caused by susceptible microorganisms:
· Upper respiratory tract infections: e.g., otitis media where the causative organism is known or suspected to be resistant to other commonly used antibiotics, or where treatment failure may carry significant risks.
· Lower respiratory tract infection: e.g. bronchitis.
· Urinary tract infections such as: cystitis, cystourethritis, and uncomplicated pyelonephritis.

Warnings and precautions
The dose should be adjusted according to the degree of renal impairment.
Cefixime may predispose to the risk of encephalopathy (which may include convulsions, confusion, impaired consciousness, and movement disorders), especially in cases of overdose or renal impairment.
Cefixime may cause acute kidney failure.
A false-positive reaction for glucose in urine may occur with Benedict's or Fehling's solutions or with copper sulfate test tablets, but not with tests based on glucose oxidase enzyme reactions.
False-positive direct Coombs' test has been reported during treatment with cephalosporin antibiotics, so it is important to be aware that a positive Coombs' test may be due to the drug.
